Azores, The Islands of Portugal

Belonging to Portugal, this is one area of the world that is still untouched by the negative aspects of tourism, and there are plans in place to ensure that the infrastructure of these beautiful and natural islands is sustained long into the future. The Azores Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, about two hours flying time and 930 miles (1500 Km) from Lisbon, and about five hours flying time and 2422 miles (3900 Km) from the eastern coast of North America. The islands’ individual areas vary between S. Miguel’s 290 square miles (747 Km2) and Corvo’s 7 square miles (17 Km2). The islands are Sao Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Pico, Faial, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Flores and Corvo, and each of them produces their own variety of fresh cheese that accompanies every meal, often along with wines that mainly come from Pico.
