Every year there is a period in which hundreds of sea turtles arrive on the beaches of Mazatlan to lay their eggs. Some of these species are Olive Ridley and Leatherback.
The season begins in June and ends in November. The Mazatlan Aquarium is in charge of protecting these eggs and the nesting beaches in an area of 21 km.
For more than 30 years, Mazatlan has had a turtle protection and release program and to date, more than a million baby turtles have been released. The importance of this activity is to facilitate and ensure that the hatchling reaches the sea, increasing the chances of survival, since out of every 100 hatchlings only 2 or 3 reach a mature age.
From August to December, locals and tourists can enjoy the beautiful experience of releasing turtles and watch their journey into the immense waters of the Sea of Cortez. These releases happen from different points of the city and are an excellent activity to enjoy with the family.
