NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — With more than 6,000 shows performed, entertaining more than 1.2 million people, Canadiana Productions Inc. is planning a showstopper for this season’s Oh Canada Eh? Dinner Show.
After all, the show has been performed in Niagara Falls for 25 years. It would be typically Canadian to politely stand by, but there is simply so much good Canadian music and talent out there that new elements are being added to make the award-winning show even better.
“We have come a long way from our humble beginnings,” says Jim Cooper, President of Canadiana Productions Inc. “When we launched, nobody figured we’d last six months. For our first five years, we did the same show every time. Now here we are 25 years later, producing Oh Canada Eh? during the tourism season, and three or four original productions through the fall and winter months.”
Entertaining residents and tourists in Niagara Falls since 1994, Oh Canada Eh? tells a Canadian story through the music of Canadian artists and performers. Each show is an immersive experience with the performers also mingling with the guests, creating a unique experience to get up close to the actors.
The songs, the actors, the production, the rustic log cabin theatre — even the structure of the show itself — is pure Canadiana.
The task of honouring 25 years of Oh Canada Eh? shows while still presenting fresh, new material falls to Lee Siegel, Artistic Director at Canadiana Productions Inc. Siegel began his career in theatre as an 18 year old performer in Oh Canada Eh?, before building an extensive stage resume that includes Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway and several performances in Stratford.
For the anniversary show, Siegel has created 30 minutes of new material that draws in music from more recent Canadian sensations like Drake, Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendez to balance pieces from Canadian stalwarts like Paul Anka, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion.
“This show is a true Canadian experience exploring all that is iconic in Canada, from maple syrup to the Mounties,” says Siegel. “This year’s production is a fresh update for someone who has seen the show before, but at the same time still has everything you love about the show — Anne of Green Gables, Mounties, hockey players, the Log Driver’s Waltz.”
Almost all of the songs performed — which range from folk to country to pop to rock — routinely appear on charts listing the top 100 Canadian songs of all time.
The 2019 season of Oh Canada Eh? Dinner Show opens in the Log Cabin Theatre on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on April 22nd. For more information, please visit ohcanadaeh.com.
